Lappeenranta University of Technology Department of Information Technology RADEK SPÁČIL Forcing Usage Rules in Public Wireless LANs Thesis for the Degree of Master of Science in Technology 2002 With rapid increase of popularity of wireless LANs and employing of this technology in large scale networks, a necessity of forcing usage rules arise. This thesis describes how to force users to follow usage rules in Public Wireless LANs. Problems discussed in the thesis are methods of revealing rogue DHCP servers and users using their own IP addresses, which are not issued by official DHCP server. Every methods considers also stopping such users to violate the usage rules. Central logging as a mean of acquisition of information necessary for these tasks is also addressed. The proposed solutions are custom made for the test network, but general ideas are applicable in any wireless or wired environment. Thesis contains 55 pages, 22 figures, 4 tables and 4 appendices Supervisor: JOUNI IKONEN, PhD. Examiner: Professor JAN VORÁČEK

A new SDN-based framework for wireless local area networks
Nowadays wireless networks are becoming important in personal and public communication andgrowing very rapidly. Similarly, Software Dened Network (SDN) is an emerging approach to over-come challenges of traditional networks. In this paper, a new SDN-based framework is proposedto ne-grained control of 802.11 Wireless LANs. This work describes the benets of programmableAcc...
متن کاملWireless LAN Security Defense In Depth
A lot has been said about wireless networking in recent years especially on the wireless LAN. More importantly, it has changed the way people think about wireless networks. Used to be seen as expensive technology for individuals, wireless LAN can now be seen not only in enterprise networks but also at public areas like the airport, hotels, coffee shops and also in shopping malls. This increasin...
متن کاملPoster: VALI – An SDN-based Management Framework for Public Wireless LANs
Usage of WiFi is becoming increasingly popular in public wireless LAN (WLAN) settings like malls, airports and train stations. Similarly to other prominent examples of WiFi usage like enterprise and home settings, publicWLANs could also benefit from an SDN-based coordinated management framework that deals with issues like interference and mobility management. However, unlike these settings, pub...
متن کاملWireless LANs
Wireless LANs based on the IEEE 802.11 standard have achieved wide customer acceptance in the enterprise environment. They are expected to continue to expand in popularity and become ubiquitous communication systems even in private and public places. This paper discusses the basics of the wireless LAN physical layer, focusing on radio tranceiver specifications and design options.
متن کاملts-PWLAN: a value-add system for providing tiered wireless services in public hot-spots
Access to data services through wireless means gains is becoming commonplace daily. Wireless LANs are deployed in both private (e.g., corporate or home) and in public “hot-spot” (e.g., hotels and airports) settings. Accessing data services via (for profit) public wireless LAN (PWLAN) installations is typically based on user subscription and pre-configured services profiles pertaining primarily ...
